  THE MESSENGER
The Musketeers Newsletter
May 2008

Part of the Multiple Sclerosis Society North Staffs Branch.
Charity Reg.207495

Fund Spending Report

Our next three activities are as follows:

bulletJuly 16th – Walk on Barlaston Downs followed by a buffet. Ring me for details on 01782 523028.
bulletAugust 20th – BBQ at John Jenkins’. Again, ring me for details.
bulletSeptember 17th – This is yet to be decided but if you have any interesting suggestions please let me know.

IMPORTANT REQUEST.
As you know, I am fortunate in being able to raise funds from certain sources that enable us to provide all Musketeers activities free to members. Unfortunately, the Branch cannot use these sources which makes their fundraising much more difficult. If any Musketeers, or their partners, can spare a little time it would be greatly appreciated. Even if it’s only a couple of hours each year it will help. If you can help please ring Wendy and tell her so she will know who she can call on when required. Many thanks in anticipation.

Geoff Hick

Message from our Chairman

Since the last Messenger we have had our AGM and after all the voting was over we have the same committee as last year. Surprise. Surprise!!!! I hope you all remember that none of us are getting any younger and we won’t always be here to run things.

This year for our annual event with partners we have arranged Sunday Lunch at the Borough Arms in Newcastle on Sunday 27th July. If you would like to attend please ring Geoff on the number below, I look forward to seeing you there.

The other problem with having the same committee is that we are running out of ideas for “something different” at our monthly meeting, if you have some great new idea please give Geoff a ring, on 01782 523028.

Joan Hick

Chairman.

A chance for you to tell the Government what it’s like for you as a carer.

If you feel that as a carer you are not getting the help and support you need, or believe that services could and should be improved, you can make your views known by contributing to a questionnaire study that is investigating this very problem.

A team from King’s College London has been commissioned by the Department of Health to carry out this study across the UK as part of the Government's National Service Framework (NSF) for Long-term (Neurological) Conditions.

If you decide to take part the team will post you a set of questionnaires to fill in and return. Most questions involve ticking a box, circling a number or writing a short sentence.

They will then telephone you at a time convenient to you to help with any questions you were unsure about, and to give you the opportunity to tell them about any problems that were not covered.

If you would like to know more, you can:

- Phone Diana Jackson or Dee Howley: 0207-848-5582 or 0207-848-5418

YES, I AM A SENIOR CITIZEN!

I’m the life of the party….even if it lasts until 8 p.m.

I’m very good at opening childproof caps….with a hammer.

I’m usually interested in going home before I get to where I’m going.

I’m awake many hours before my body allows me to get up.

I’m smiling all the time because I can’t hear a thing you’re saying.

I’m very good at telling stories; over and over and over and over…..

I’m aware that other people’s grandchildren are not as cute as mine.

I’m so cared for – long term care, eye care, private care, dental care.

I’m not really grouchy; I just don’t like traffic, waiting, crowds, lawyers, loud music, unruly kids, barking dogs and a few other things I can’t seem to remember right now.

I’m sure everything I can’t find is in a safe, secure place, somewhere.

I’m wrinkled, saggy, lumpy, and that’s just my left leg.

I’m beginning to realise that aging is not for wimps.

I’m sure they are making adults much younger these days, and when did they let kids become policemen?

I’m wondering, if you’re as old as you feel, how could I be alive at 150?

And, how can my kids be older than I feel at times

I’m a walking storeroom of facts….I’ve just lost the key to the storeroom door.

Now if I could only remember who sent this to me, I wouldn’t send it back to them, but I would send it to many more.

Thing to do in the Garden in July

Pinch out the growing tips of basket and container plants to encourage them to produce bushy even growth and lots of flowers. Encourage chrysanthemum shoots to branch out and carry more blooms by pinching out shoot tips from June to early July. This technique is called stopping.

Sow seeds

Biennials, such as foxgloves, sweet williams, Canterbury bells and forget-me-nots, should be sown as soon as fresh seed is available.

Pests and diseases

Use a forceful jet from a garden hose to knock aphids off water lilies and other garden plants. Spray roses to protect them against problems with mildew, blackspot or rust.

Divide bearded iris

Lift and divide bearded irises once they have finished flowering. Remove any dormant sections from the centre of the clump, and replant the fresh new shoots.

Summer bedding plants

Finish planting out summer bedding plants in borders, baskets and containers. Fill gaps with large argyranthemums, fuchsias or pelargoniums.

Cut down early-flowering perennials

Remove faded flowers on perennials such as lupins and delphiniums. Early pruning often encourages a second flush of flowers late in the season. Cut the flower-spike down to just above a new shoot or leaf, and give each plant a generous liquid feed to encourage fresh growth. Remove the seedheads from aquilegia to prevent them from spreading.
